Elena’s conversation with Stefan showed how immensely she has matured over this season.

In 3x22, she was grateful to Stefan for saving her life and in a way she thanked him for that by choosing him.

In 4x23, she’s grateful to Stefan for not giving up on her but she didn’t feel obligated to thank him for that by going back to him—because she’s able to recognize that there’s a difference between who you think you are obligated to be with and you who really truly want to be with. She finally understands that gratitude is not love, that the two can be separate.

This episode has shown that Elena is no longer afraid of doing what’s unconventional, and that the thing that’s considered morally “right” by other people isn’t necessarily the right thing for her, or the thing that she should really do.

More than bringing Damon and Elena finally and fully together, season four has been about developing and changing Elena from a young, uncertain girl into a full grown, self-assured, mature woman.

Also, if anyone is wondering why I’m being pretty chill about their being no sire bond explanation/reaffirmation of Elena’s agency, it’s because, I think they way they left it was open to interpretation. The things in Elena’s speech echoed that she’s been feeling and acting like herself the entire time, and this episode also brought up her killing Connor, turning it off, and her burning down her house with no “sire bond” attached to it. I’m personally taking that to mean that the sire bond was irrelevant. It didn’t matter whether it existed or how it effected Elena at all, because it was completely irrelevant. Elena was Elena the entire time, she makes the same choice when it’s ‘broken’ as when it supposedly affected her and she’s unapologetic and goes into it eyes open.

Elena isn’t sorry about it and neither am I.

And where will he have to make changes in him, in his behavior? Or will he still be, “I am who I am. You love me for who I am. I’m not going to change for you”? Katherine being the one to take the cure was also a huge shocker and we heard you originally planned on giving it to another character. Can you say who it was and why the switch?
Interestingly enough, when Kevin [Williamson] and I, back in season zero, when we first launched the series and started talking about knowing that one day we’d make Elena a vampire and with that move would come the realization that there was a cure; I think in the back of our heads we always intended to heal Elena. But the instant that we actually made the decision to move forward with Elena the first thing we realized was she would of course be the one person we couldn’t cure because it was just too easy.

Instantly, we decided that the person that needed to be cured, that made the most sense from a story point of view, that would be a great surprise, would be Damon. We believed that because of all people he’s the one that said he missed being human, but he’s also the one who relished the most being a vampire. Well, about five minutes into the season, right after the cure was revealed to be in existence, I think I read instantly someone was like, ‘Oh, they’re going to cure Damon.’ I thought, ‘Oh shit!’ [Laughs.]

Ultimately, the person that we cured we wanted to get really great story out of it and I think part of Damon’s delightful charm as a vampire is that he is a vampire and I’m not so sure outside of the novelty of turning him human that we’d be able to get as much as we would have wanted to dramatically. We played around with a lot of other ideas for a little while before realizing the answer was so clear and so obvious and so right in front of us.
